  • Craft Bazaar exhibition at Kalashetra Foundation, Chennai

    The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, popularly known as “Poompuhar”, is a Government of Tamil Nadu Undertaking and is in charge of the handicrafts sector in the state of Tamil Nadu. The main objective of the Corporation is to provide marketing assistance to the craftsmen of the State in particular and for the craftsmen community in general. The Corporation achieves this objective by marketing the products of the craftsmen through its large network of 12 showrooms situated all over Tamil Nadu and also at New Delhi and Kolkata. Apart from the Sales showrooms, the Corporation  also has 7 of its own production units.

    In addition to rendering marketing assistance through its showrooms the Corporation also conducts a large number of exhibitions every year throughout the country in order to provide more marketing avenues for the poor artisans.

    As a part of our exhibition programme for the current year, we are organizing “Craft Bazaar” exhibition at Kalakshetra Foundation, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai from 22.01.2016 to 31.01.2016 with financial assistance of the O/o Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi.

    This exhibition was inaugurated by Thiru. P. Mohan, Hon’ble Minister for Rural Industries & Labour, Government of Tamil Nadu at 4.30 p.m. Friday on 22nd January 2016 in the presence of Thiru Harmander Singh, IAS., Principal Secretary to Government, Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department, Chennai, Dr. Santhosh Babu, I.A.S., Chairman & Managing Director, The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, Chennai and Thiru P. Mallikarjunaiah, Regional Director (Southern Region), O/o Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Chennai.

    Craft Bazaar exhibition at Kalashetra Foundation Chennai

    In the ongoing exhibition, we have displayed a wide and exotic collection of heritage items like Brass oil lamps, Bronze Icons, Wood Carvings, Thanjavur Art Plates, Thanjavur Painting, Stone carvings, Artificial Jewellery, Brass sheet metal products, Papier mache dolls, Incense and perfumery, Rajasthan Marble craft items, Madupani Paintings from Bihar, Wood Carvings from Andhra Pradesh, Palm leaf Paintings from Orissa, handcrafted textiles and many more gift items. Handicrafts from all over India are displayed under one roof.

    The exhibition is open from 22nd to 31st January (10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. daily , including Sundays) and a special discount of 10% is being offered. We accept all major credit / debit cards, without any service charges.

    We appeal to the citizens of Chennai to patronize this exhibition as they have been kind enough to do so on earlier occasions, so that the maximum number of craftsmen can benefit.

  • FEATHERED PRIDE OF INDIA – PEACOCK

    Peacock - the national bird of our country is our pride. The sight of this beautiful feathered bird gives immense pleasure to almost everyone, and sparks the excitement to see it dance.

    People who are fond of decorating their houses often like to have portraits or models of peacock to decorate their houses. At Poompuhar, under The Tamil Nadu Handicraft Development, one can choose from quite a few handcrafted decorative itemsin various peacock designs. There are even some sculptures of peacock hand crafted by the expert artists.

  • POOMPUHAR THANJAVUR ART PLATES

    The metal art plates of Thanjavur are the traditional handicraft of Tamil Nadu. These beautiful plates showcase the careful workmanship of the artisans. This art is said to have emerged about 250 years ago. It is said that Rajah Sirfoji II wanted to present some unique piece of art to his guests. He was so impressed on seeing these art plates that out of the various wonderful works of the artisans, he chose to gift these amazing art plates.

    The Thanjavur Art plates are made using brass, copper and silver. The wonderful art plates bear designs of birds, animals, flowers, gods and goddesses or even geometric patterns. The designs are beaten out of copper and silver sheets and then embossed on a brass plate. The plates are usually round in shape. They are mounted on a wooden base and made into wall hangings. The plates are available in various sizes with the maximum size being 32 inches.

    In more modern forms of the Thanjavur brass plates, along with the base of the brass plate,silver foils with embossed motifs arranged on laminated shields on wooden base is also being used. This gives an impression of a totally silver memento, and the look is quite rich.

    Thanjavur Art Plates have been given legal protection from counterfeit products. In 1999, they were registered under the Geographical Indication Act, according to which Thanjavur Art Plate producers must register themselves as Authorized Users. This way, duplicate works can be checked and questioned by checking out the GI registration and logo.

    Thanjavur Art Plates, also known as the tri – metal – artwork, is practiced by almost 250 artisans, who belong to the Viswakarma community and live in and around the Thanjavur town.

    Appreciating the lovely Art Plates of Thanjavur, Mr. Dattatreya, Senior assistant Director, Office of the Development Commissioner (handicrafts), Union Ministry of Textiles, said that if the designs on the Art Plates can also be used on utility products such as jewelry boxes, candle stands, mirrors etc., it can add value to them.

    For the further improvement and sustenance of this craft, the Tamil Nadu govt. is aiming to provide insights to the artisans regarding certain technical inputs for surface treatment for preventing discoloration or fading of the Art Plates. To cater to the changing tastes of the buyers and for it to suit all types of markets, artisans are also being sensitized about new themes that can be adapted to this art.

  • Poompuhar Organizing Crafts Mela In Puducherry to Showcase the Work of Indian Artisans

    The Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, Popularly known as POOMPUHAR, a Government of Tamilnadu undertaking is incharge of the handicrafts sector in the state of Tamilnadu. This Corporation was established during 1973. The main objective of the Corporation is to preserve the ancient crafts of Tamilnadu and uplifting the standard of living of the craftsmen by providing marketing assistance to the craftsmen of the state.

    The Corporation achieves this objective by marketing the products of the craftsmen through its large network of 14 showrooms situated all over Tamilnadu and also at New Delhi, Kolkatta, Bangalore.

    In order to provide additional marketing assistance to the artisans it organize exhibitions all over the country. As a part of this programme, Poompuhar Sales Showroom, 108, Anna Salai, Chennai-600 002 conducts an exhibition in the name of “Crafts Mela” with exquisite handicrafts, handcrafted textiles, jewelleries and handcrafted furniture etc., from all over India at Vel Sokkanathan Thirumana Nilayam, 32, Vallalar Salai, Kamaraj Nagar, Puducherry, from 02.01.2015 to 11.01.2015.

    This exhibition was inaugurated by Thiru.P.PARTHIBAN, IAS., Project Director, Director Rural Development, DRDA, Puducherry.

Morethan 40 Artisans from various states are directly participating and selling their products.
