Wood Carvings

Wood carvings are practiced in Tamilnadu from the time of this art was associated with temples. The most characteristic processional vehicle for the deities for the temple is known as Temple Car. The mount of the deity is vahana. All these are made of Teak, Rosewood, Vagai, Kongu wood with intricate carvings and details.

 

The doors of the temples or a home, carving panels of different motifs in teak, jack, mango, neem wood are has a variety of workmanship and skill.

 

The mount or vahana of the deity made of teak in the shape of various mythological birds and animals and coloured has its own traditional value in the temples.

 

Ramayana, Mahabharatha scenes, hunting forest scenes, procession scenes are frequently made. Religious motifs and lady with mirror or with creeper are usually made in panels.
